Making our house a home & capturing memories with photos, lots of photos.

When I started writing this post a few weeks ago I had full intentions of it being a
2012 ~ our year so far post
Somehow it turned more into a
Making our house a home post.
Which I think is just what I was meant to post about in this momment
I do hope to post that 2012 update though, when the time is right.

............................................................

My Family Mission Statement for this year included taking more photos and with the help of
Fat Mum Slims photo a day challenge for the month of January and now February
and the Project 365/366 app I have been taking loads of photos!
I am loving looking back on all the photos I've taken it takes me back to that momment.
I am also really enjoying seeing physical proof that I am working on one of my 2012 goals everyday.

Januarys photos

Another part of the photo goal was to display them some more
whats the point in taking all these photos and only displaying them on facebook?
So I got a little creative and put together a few different photo collages.

the collage in the lounge room

the "love" collage in my room

Another goal on our list was to do with decluttering and organising the house.
I am happy to say I have pretty much decluttered majority of the house there is just a few bits and pieces around to finish doing but overall the main living areas look great!
I now have a study nook

a work in progress command centre.

I've even had time to decorate with some wooden letters and new lamps.

It really is the small things that make a house a home. ;)

I love coming into our home now, its warm and orgainsed and starting to fill with gorgeous memories in the form of photos.
It feels good knowing I have created a nice little place for me and my babes... well until the end of the year where we'll be packing it all up and re-creating again.
I'm excitied about that though!

Was decluttering and organising on your 2012 to-do list? How are you going with it?

Meal Planning Wednesday ~ posted on Thursday ;)

The Organised Housewife

I'm back on board with posting my meal plans with The Organised Housewife
so this weeks meal plan goes something like this
Thursday - something from the freezer
I've just been through the freezer and have made a list of everything we have so there is plenty to choose from.
Friday - Mexibake ~ recipe from Planning With Kids
Saturday - Dolmio slow cooked chicken with tomato and italian herbs served with pasta
Sunday - Mummas meat pie and roast vegies
Tuesday - Homemade sausage rolls
Wednesday - Warm chicken and cous cous salad
just me for dinner

Baking - more 2 tone choc chip cookies and Im going to attempt some muffin sized apple pies

I am trying to get right back to homecooked and get into the kitchen some more after the boys were slightly "insane" after chirstmas as we had slacked off
but as you can see there is alot of homemade stuff so I know what's going into our food and into our bodies.

Also I dont necassarily cook those meals on those days its mainly a guide and a way to pick easy meals on our busiest days but I absolutly chop adn chanage days if I feel like it

Whats on your menu this week?

Week 1 ~ 52 Weeks to Simplify your Life

As I've said in many of posts thus far 2012 is a fresh slate for us
So when Deb from Home Life Simplified created an amazing challenge
52 weeks to simplify your life I jumped on the bandwagon!
This challenge fits perfectly with our fresh start so here we go!
you can read all the details if you click on the links above

Week #1 Challenge: Create a list of everything that went “right” in 2011

*Watching Master J and Lil C get closer and closer everyday
*Returning to work
*Master Js speech going to the next level
*Master J finally starting to ask "why" about everything
*Cohen taking his 1st steps
*Starting a fresh at Christmas time
*Finding friends in amazing places
*Nurturing 2 of my most important friendships with Miss Em and Miss Lauren
*Friendship dates with Miss Jodie
*Learning how strong I really am
*Uncovering my love of cooking
*Really getting the hang and loving Meal Planning
*Developing a closer relationship with my "adopted" mumma
(my mums friend who I can go to whenever I need as my mum is living in the USA)
*Getting down to pre Lil C weight
*Meeting a man that is understanding and caring
*Returning to blogging
*Finally learning to stand up for myself a little bit more
*Taking a huge leap and applying for TAFE
*Inspiring people with my cooking and crafting
*Finding my crafty bug
*Master J getting accepted into early pre-entry Kindy!
(due to his speech)
*Getting closer with my nana, aunty and little cousins
*Creating new traditions and actually sticking to them
*being able to take 13 months maternity leave to be at home with my boys
(I was only able to take 3 months with master J so this was HUGE for me)

This was a hard task for me 2011 was not a good year for us
It was full of ups and downs and they were quite extreme
But looking at this list I think I've found the good in most of our situations.

Now to start thinking about Week 2s challenge
I think this is going to be another difficult one but I shall give it my best.

If you like this idea of this whole concept dont forget to jump over to
and join in

Making life that little bit smoother

Becoming a single mother ultimately meant I was doing the parenting for 2
Mentally is something I could handle but the physical side, meaning looking after them everyday
was going to be something I struggled with
With Master J having a developmental delay things were tough already, even with Mr S here
but at least I had an extra pair of hands
well most of the time but we will leave that blog post for my draft folder ;)

So how was I going to get through each day without completely losing the plot and ending up with a sparkly brand new white jacket and a padded cell to call my very own?

The answer for me was to be organised and prepared!
For some thats easier said then done
For me it comes quite naturally, I'm an organiser majoirty of the time
but trust me, just like most people I can get overwhelmed even when organsied!

So here a few things I do that help me get through each day that little bit more stress free
and of course they could be applied to all kinds of families!!

* Get pyjamas and nappys/jocks ready during the day
I try and do this one early in the morning and pop them into our
Pj Station
As both the boys bath together and get out together I find this helps in the fact im not searching for a matchin pjg top and bottom at the same time as I have 2 slippery towel wearing monsters running around ;)
"Raaahhhhh"
* Lay out clothes the night before
I always try and have the boys clothes, nappys/jocks, socks and shoes all ready to go for after breakfast
I check the weather the night before and then collect the clothes they need just before I tuck them into bed

* Pack daycare bags, nappy bags and handbags the night before
This is another sanity saver for me it saves rushing around in the morning trying to pack bags and not forget anything
Obviously don't pack bottles of milk or anything you want kept cold but there's no reason you cant have all that waiting in the fridge with a post it note stuck to the bags reminding you to pack it.

* Lay out breakfast dishes
This is another one that works well being done the night before
Just getting bowls, plates and spoons out ready can save some time and create less chaos, especially if you know you are going to be strapped for time.

* Meal Plan
I orginally started meal planning to save money and to avoid that 4pm~ish question
"what should we have for dinner tonight"
These days its also to help work arond the boys mainly their daycare days which are also the days I work and to try and build my freezer meals.
Through meal planning I know what we will be having during the week and on our busiest days I can prep the night before to make that night alot smoother.
Using my slow cooker is also a godsend! and there is always lots of leftovers to freeze.

* Start dinner preparation/cooking early
I find that about 3 o'clock is when it suits myself and the boys for me to begin getting dinner ready
It could simply mean cutting vegies ready or cooking a pie filling so it has time to cool.
It just means by 4/4:30ish I'm ready to start cooking for dinner to be served at 5pm
and by starting this early it allows time for distraction!
ie an upset toddler or toilet needing 3yo
which means I;ve still got plenty of time to get dinner sorted
and I dont end up stressed and frazzled at 5pm.

* Try and do at least 1 load of washing every day
This is another one that works quite well for me and the boys, for some reason I seem to have 1 decent sized load for 3 or 4 days straight and then I'm able to rest for 2 days or so while it builds up again
So doing one load a day helps lighten the work load and helps it dry quicker too!
As for the folding? well lets not go there ;)\

* Tidy & clean at night
Having kids running around all day and trying to clean is like trying to shovel snow in a blizzard
So even though I'll potter around the house during the day doing small bits and pieces I find if I do the bulk of my cleaning once the boys are in bed I can knock it over quite quickly.
The best thing i find it to not sit down especially if I'm feeling motivated.

..........................................................
As you can see alot of these are done of a night time or afternoon and for me it works.
I still get time to put my feet up at the end of the day too because without little hands trying to help it gets done quicker.
For you it might work better early in the morning ither way all of these are dependent on you, your family and your situation, because I am by no means a parenting/housewife expert.
All these ideas are as you would say
"tried and tested"
and work for me.
All you can do is try things and see if they work for you.

Do you have any helpful time or stress cutting stratergies you use?

Linking up with The Organised Housewife

The Organised Housewife

As I dont have the boys this weekend im hoping to get some baking and freezer filling done
In amongst preparation for a market & craft projects

A few weeks ago I ordered a gorgeous custom journal from this great little FB page called
Journal Addiction
I receieved it today sooooo exciting
I love stationary and I love being organised so this journal is exactly what I wanted
Michelle was amazing to work with and tweaked all the pages and design until I was completely happy

Needles to say I am over the moon with it

Front cover using my favourite colours, favourite flower and my love for butterflies

Budget page - to write each weeks budget in to allow for changes & extras each week

Meal plan page - starting with wednesday just as I do and extra space at the bottom for notes

Shopping list page - set out in coloumns and groups to make the shopping trip much easier and theres not excuse for missing anything in any of the departments

Last page is To-Do list - with check boxes so I can tick off things as I do them

I love how Michelle understood everything I wanted in my book
and made it really easy to communicate all the small details like the butterfly watermarks
and the shopping list page

Now my goal is to sit down every monday/tuesday and fill out my pages
and every night sit down with my to do list and add things for the next day.

If you're like me and an orgainsing freak fan having a journal full of things like this is like all my Christmas's have come at once ;)

Im off to write out my budget and start my to do list

What system do you have to organise your meal plan/shopping list & budget?

Getting organised - PJ Station

So i may like to be organised
its no secret.
Sometimes im not and they are the times i feel completely out of control.
I join lots of orgainsing sites
one of them being
Jade has the most fabulous ideas and tips.

One of her awesome ideas was an Errand Station
another was a Summer Station

My Pigeon Pair took inspirtaion from Jades Summer Station and created a Winter station

And i have now taken inspirtaion from both lovely ladies
and created a PJ station for my boys.

The Pj Station is a basket of after bath essentials
which are all together and can be put popped into the basket whenever you get a spare sec during the day.

Our PJ station has..

A gorgeous blue and white polka dot basket from "The Warehouse"

Inside the basket we have...

1 x nappy for Master J
set of Pjs
Singlet and pair of socks
1 x nappy for Lil C
romper or pjs
singlet and pair of socks
1 tub of normal Vicks for their feet
1 tub of Vicks Baby Balsam for their chest & back

Once the boys are in the bath, with dad supervising
I just pull this basket out and turn the heater on.

I use to get all this ready whilst they were in the bath or even earlier and that worked just fine
except i had no where to put it except on the top of the couch.
Having it all in a basket means i can keep it all together on a shelf in our bookcase
and whip it out in a few seconds.
Which is defaintly what we need when struggling with 2 slippery, tired little boys
right in the middle of feral o'clock.

Do you have any little tricks or methods that make a huge difference in the running of your day?
